2012 Blowsion Surfslam Team Rider Results

Liquid Militia would like to thank Hydro Turf for making our trip a success having good people around us is always a plus. We would also like to thank Kyle at DASA for the ride to the airport legit. We would like to also thank Ronny & Ratti from ProRider Watercraft Magazine just for being super cool peeps to hang with and for keeping the sport going. Last but definitely not least we would like to thank all our team riders who attended this event we would not have gone if it was not for you guy’s Lot’s more pics and a sick ass VIDEO is still to come….

Zack Bright killing it this year at the Surf Slam. Zack took 2nd place in Pro Freeride against Freeride legend Taylor Curtis, When we asked zack about the contest conditions he said. It’s so hard to ride, if something comes up, then you hit it. Going out there with a plan of attack is just not happening, at all. With this slam win it puts Zack sitting in second place in the IFWA (International Freeride Watercraft Association) Would Tour in Points with one more stop to go BRAZIL!!

A few more memorable moments from Zack who’s always pushing the envelope. Zack kinda landed a backflip re-entry, the crowd was pumped!! “I tried a double backflip in the big air and went one and a half, and I stomped 2 flat spin 360 re-entrys on Monday. My progression keeps going.”

Mark Gomez took 5th place in Pro Freeride & 2nd in the Pro Ski Motosurf Race. Mark holding it down competing in all three events at the slam. 1. Freeride 2. Motosurf and 3. Big air keeping up with his tipple threat theme he has going on. We asked Mark how hard was it to compete in all three events “Well that’s what I like to do, I like to be involved in as much opportunity as possible why not? My #1 is Freeride I just cant get enough of it, but if there is a chance to do a motosurf race i’m in. All events I competed in the conditions were nasty but you just power threw it and make things happen.”

Cuong Son took 9th place in Pro Freeride. That’s a few notches up from last year. Cuong had some killer runs getting some huge air. When asked about the size of the waves Cuong had this to say “Some set’s in the back were huge you just have to time it right and go for it. I had a lot of fun and am happy with myself.”

Stanton High took 17th place in Pro Freeride. Stanton was on a fresh new Krash hull going into the slam. New ski plus not a lot of practice on the new hull sometimes does not let you perform to the level you know you are at. But on the upside Stanton had a blast and is looking forward to dialing in his new ski with all the classic Stanton style he brings. When we asked him how he felt on his new hull he said “I love it, it’s a great hull, looking forward to seeing what new things I can do on it.”

Tanner Thomas Amateur Freeride

Tanner Thomas took 5th place in Amateur Freeride. Tanner had a lot better luck this year than last year, no rescue hook through the hand and his ski did not get lost forever into the Pacific. Tanner’s fully back in action, and riding solid. When we asked what him what he had to say about the surf he said,The surf’s so powerful its unbelievable, I’m happy with what i did all around.

Pete Zernik Pro Ski Motosurf Race

Pete Zernik took 6th place in the Pro Ski Motosurf race. Just after his last moto we asked Pete how it went and he said,It was just jump after jump, gopro falling off here, gopro falling off there, I dont know  where I ended up.

stanton high takes 2nd place at the Peruvian Freeride Expo

Stanton High Competing in Peru

LM- How was the travel to Peru?
SH- LONG! A flight transfer and layover was a big mistake! lesson learned lol

LM- What place did you end up getting?
SH- 2nd place!

LM- To took 2nd place overall were you surprised?
SH- surprised? yea, not really. i had a feeling i was going to do well, but its impossible to know. I had no clue what we were stepping into!

LM- How was the competition (other riders)?
SH- great! it ended up being all my friends and they ALL are experienced riders. the only issues we had were with the stock Yamaha Superjets, they barely floated after ever round!

LM- How was the food?
SH- bomb! had the best cirveche of my life! so many Peruvian dishes, I don’t think there was anything not to love!

Stanton High Competing Point Look Back.

Stanton High Podium 2nd Place.

Stanton High Big Barrel Roll.

LM- What were the conditions like (waves)?
SH- beautiful! but then we rode late in the day and got the rough side of it. still very big and powerful even by my standards. saw some waves over 8ft, very fun

LM- Is there wild monkeys in Peru?
SH- so many! we partied with them, they were running around the hotel half naked, they are crazy!
wait REAL monkeys? …no, maybe in the jungle or something lol

LM- If asked to go back would you? And why?
SH- would I.. hmmm… YESSSS!! OF COURSE! Peru is an amazing place, I made some amazing friends, and had an amazing time with friends I already had. no.brainer!

LM- What was something you forgot to take on this trip that you were like Shi#?
SH- hmm I came prepared! used everything I had and no problems running out. packing skills! thanks boy scouts lol

LM- How was the ski you ended up riding? Did it work out ok for you?
SH- It was used and abused, totally stock, with more issues than a jersey girl in front of mtv’s cameras. lol stock 08′s don’t turn at ALL, that made it super difficult to ride like I normally do, but everyone said I looked the most comfortable on it. did not feel like it! I ended up being forced to ride barefoot, just to fit my feet in the straps with the other straps that were installed. on stock turf, it was not comfy!

LM-Who would you like to thank for making this trip possible?
SH- the only person that deserves mention is Anibal Aliaga. he really is the man behind the entire Peruvian Freeride and Jetski racing scene in Peru. I am honored to consider him my friend. thank you Anibal! Xan Sampaio gets mention too! thanks bro!

LM- Anything you would like to add?
SH- this trip really showed me how dreams can be achieved, I never thought I would be traveling to paradise to ride. I just do this stuff for fun and now I have become a big deal in the sport I just can’t explain how that makes me feel. walking the beach in Peru literally brought tears to my eyes because I DID IT. I made something of myself by doing something I love. it is just so beyond my expectations for myself, it makes me so proud I wish my dad could see.

Stanton High Gets one of the USA Spots to attend the Peru Freeride

Stanton High Riding @ Pismo Beach, CA

LM- What’s happening in Peru?
SH-Peruvian Freeride Expo! This is the third competition of its type with riders invited from Europe, Brazil, and the United States.

LM- How is your Spanish?
SH- Uhhh, I’m going to have to download the translation app!

LM- What are you going to be doing there?
SH- I’m riding and promoting Freeride Jetskiing in a Country where it’s a very obscure sport. I’m told the Peruvians know how to have a good time too!

LM- Have you ever traveled outside the US to do anything related to your sport?
SH- yes, I’ve lived in china working as a stunt Jetski actor at a theme park. that was awesome and could definetly see myself doing that again

LM- What kind of ride will be you be on?
SH- A stock 2010 Yamaha Superjet. It’s nice because that is similar to the setup I am used to. Just drop a couple footstraps in!

LM- How long will you be there?
SH- From March 7th to the 11th. I’m missing the Pismo spring break, but I may make it back in time to meet any stragglers on Monday.

LM- Will you be checking out any other sites?
SH- Yeah, as much as I can, being a tourist is half the fun! I’m excited to see Lima and the other great Peruvian cities.

Stanton High Invited

LM- Travel Buddies?
SH- Jack Sutton from Skiclinic will be going to ride too. Jack is a super cool guy and best I could imagine outside of Team LM.

LM- What do you expect to gain from this trip? if anything?
SH- I expect to gain a trip to Peru to ride! Haha really not interested in gaining anything, Im just stoked to go ride!

ENCORE!
A big thank you to Xan Sampaio and Jared Aljouny for recommending me to this event! Another huge thanks to Anibal Aliaga for putting together an event like this. I’m super excited to go to Peru and happy to be a part of it the growth of freeride worldwide. Thanks alot and see you when I get back!

Stanton High’s Broken Arm, How it went down in Stan’s words…

THROWN

Pismo Beach, California

A big swell was incoming, I wanted to take advantage of the Central California slammers.  When it peaks the ledges are beautiful with plunging 10 footers.  The barrels are insane. It’s ‘Perfect Pismo’. I was hungry to practice before the Blowsion Surf Slam arrived.

I did all my normal tricks, back flips, and combos. As the story always go, I was heading into my last flip of the day. This was a biggie smacking in at 8 foot high, I wanted to ledge off it’s lip. I held my ski wide open and went for a super big leap.  Lifeguards were watching from shore. Later people viewing from shore said this last jump of mine was nearing thirty feet of clear air.

Feeling like I was hitting 20 feet off the water, it was a big launch. Pretty big air, reminded me of last winter. I was a bit hesitant of landing flat from this height.  I bailed off but did not clear away from the ski.  I go ahead of the ski, and landed on top of the hood coming down waterside. I knew my arm was broken.  It felt like it had extended backwards. I hit my head and I’m still burning a fat bump from the impact on my chin.

Another wave was coming. I had enough time to swim to the ski, hurt, I climbed back into the tray.  Pulling that trigger throttle was the worst. I had to move fast. Controlling the ski with my broken arm, I lost most of my steerage on that side.  Riding back to shore in limp mode I finally made it. An old guy who was watching from his car came up to me.  He said he was impressed with my riding. I told him I had just broke my arm.  ‘Do you need me to call an ambulance’ he says.  I declined, saying I’d do the honors.

The lifeguards drove towards me, I waved to them They iced and splinted my arm and I was off to the hospital.  Once in SLO the first Xray showed only one broken bone, no surgery.  The following week at the orthopedic, a second Xray revealed I had two fractures and a separation.  Clean breaks which should heal up in 4-6 weeks.

It didn’t hurt as much as the disappointment of missing the Surf Slam event.

Liquid Militia Team Rider Stanton High didn’t get a repeat performance at the BSS in Oregon. He had some new tricks he wanted to reveal to ramp up the style at the contest. Always next year!

Stan’s last comments were ‘Pismo Rager’. Enough said, see you there!

5 LIQUID MILITIA TEAM RIDERS ATTACK THE 2010 BLOWSION SURF SLAM

September 10-12, 2010, Pacific City, Oregon USA
LiquidMilitia.com

Team Liquid Militia arrived from Southern California by caravan, air and land. Trucks, rental cars, trailers and competition boats descended early on the morning of Friday the 10th for qualifying positions in gloomy weather. Saturday preliminaries and Sunday’s finals shone in perfect conditions and closed with fog. The LM team set up a Liquid Militia Team House a typical of our ‘KOABFD’ way of life. Good Times!

Liquid Militia’s Zack Bright takes the spotlight with an overall win in the K&S Kuwait Big Air Showdown! Zack pulled off the biggest solo trick on 3 runs and earned himself $500.00. This was Zack’s first time competing on his brand new Freeride Rickter boat, an impressive debut.

Mark Gomez was not only battling in the Surf Slam, but exhaustion from driving 24 hours straight up the Western Coastline from California, an arduous 1200 mile trek. Mark was throwing decent no handed barrel rolls one after the other on his ‘Black Pearl’ Yamaha Super Jet.

Cuong Son scoped up the wild card for the finals on his Rickter. ‘King Cuong’ was picking off the set waves and did his reverse foot aerials. Cuong was going big and hitting one hand and foot nose stabs. Cuong was hitting big air Nor Cal Style, and is getting used to his new Rickter.

Stanton High was riding his newly acquired Yamaha Super Jet and bombing huge re-entries and low tucks. He has his own style unique to himself and not like any other riders. He really stands out in the surf with his fluid and laid back but aggressive rides.

Jared Ajlouny wanted to do a double back flip for the Big Air show but never captured a worthy wave in his heat. He was hoping for better surf conditions but they never arrived. Jared pulled off a single back flip with the water that was delivered on his yellow hull.

The Liquid Militia Team was ‘Team Yellow’ this past weekend, with most of our riders on yellow stand up. We are very proud to be working with some of the finest talent in the PWC community.

LM Team Placings
1st Place in the K&S Kuwait Big Air taken by Zack Bright. Mark Gomez, Stanton High and Maxime Baroero all ‘tied’ for fifth place in the Pro Freeride Competition. Zach Bright placed 9th ‘tied’ with Bruno Jacob, Chris Rosner, Jerry Jones, Cuong Son, Tiago Geitens, and Jerry Brandon.

Liquid Militia Core Team – Stanton High

Liquid Militia has brought new talent to the Core Team for 2010!

Stanton High is a newcomer of 3 years to Free Riding. When you see his big air, barrel rolls and surf ride sessions you would think he’s a seasoned veteran. Not so, he’s part of the new generation of Free Riders who will make new standards for others to follow.

He is definitely a progressive rider. Stanton embodies the passion of our Core Team Riders and represents with a free flowing style. He trains along the Central California coast in San Luis Obispo. California’s Freeriding epicenter with the most consistent surf and access spots.

Progressive is a word that complements the character of Stanton.

He brought down a 3rd place in the Amateur Class at the Pismo Surf Slam in his first competition. Stanton is training for the Oregon Surf Slam, one of the biggest free ride gatherings in the world, and is focused on developing his own unique tricks. ‘I’m looking forward to competing against established riders’, he says.

That’s right, Liquid Militia will be there supporting our newest Rider!
