The Ride After The Ride
TEAM SCOPE? ‘My team was Bobby Kerns, Todd, “Sarge” Young, and I. I think we did outstanding considering we were running on a stock spec ski. Our Lap times were fast and consistent, we were doing great.’
HOW WAS THE RACE? ‘Our competition Stand Up was pumping on a great running stock spec motor that was actually brand new and assembled by Bobby Kerns just 3 nights before the Hahn. Unfortunately a cylinder base stud snapped with the nut which holds the cylinder down and caused a chain reaction of other nuts to come loose causing our engine to stop running. It wasn’t in the assembly,, the motor ran solid and wide open giving us consistent 12 minute lap times. Small parts simply break sometimes, one small bolt can become your whole race when it decides to fail…..that’s just Racing..part of the show.’
THE CHALLENGE? ‘My greatest challenge is the same ‘mindset’ game I encounter in other sports, it’s similar to when I’m invovled in wrestling, the thought process and confidence is everything. My initial thoughts heading into the Hahn was overcoming my personal doubts about being able to stand up for that distance and keep the ski wide open throttle through some sections of choppy water. Being my first Mark Hahn race, I finally understand just how long the laps were. On my second run of laps I took out my waterproof MP3 player which helped allow me to ride wide open almost unconsciously, not over thinking about the chop or controlling the ski, and prevented me from talking to myself which is all you really have to do out there when your riding this incredibly long race. The Hahn is a benchmark for how you think, the reality and needs of the boat, it’s an amazing race of endurance on three levels, not one perspective, but a long haul.’
TIME OUT? ‘The track was incredibly long, 10 mile laps, and for the most part the water surface was very smooth. The heavier high horsepower skis definetly had an advantage to power through the light chop while staying hooked up.’
THE ENERGY? The Mark Hahn race always has a unique energy to it. Especially in the KMG Racing award winning pits. There is never a time where our team wasn’t in communication about who’s coming in, where our riders are, who needs fuel or anything else race related . Its the biggest team movement I have ever experienced in PWC Racing and is the exact reason why KMG Racing won the Sea Doo Best Overall Pit crew award this year!
APPLAUSE: I would like to thank Dawn and David of KMG Racing for giving me the possibility of racing this event. I also want to thank the people who made this Race happen for Team KMG Racing: Impros, Bomber eye wear, Mystik lubricants, We are MX, and IPD Graphics.
MARK GOMEZ 300
Liquid Militia rider Mark Gomez, #226
Team Name: KMG Racing
Team Riders: Mark Gomez, Todd Young, Bobby Kerns.
Mark will be competing on a Kawasaki SXR, Stand Up Open Class
LM- Have you raced before at the Hahn?
MG- I have been to the Hahn only to support my friends racing the past 2 years in the pits.. now it’s my turn to win it. Being on a pit crew is fun, but it’s time to run the track.
My current Race supporting sponsors are: Liquid Militia Clothing, KMG Racing, Hydro-Turf, Impros, Mystic Lubricants, Bomber Eyewear, and Kommander Industries.
LM- Thoughts heading into the race?
MG- Dig deep and push hard for two laps at a time with the help of fast pits and the same strategy and mindset out of my team mates.
LM- What will your greatest challenge be?
MG- Endurance Endurance Endurance.
Tell us about your Pit Crew:
My pit crew is not your crew of classic Jet Ski Heroes. We’re the other guys! Team KMG Racing is going to show the factory teams how to win a race and have a kick ass time doing it at the same time.
LM- How have you been training?
MG- I have been riding the rough waters of Granada street. launch point in Long Beach with my friends and traveling all over riding in different events to build up on my endurance. I have been mountain biking and working extra non paid shows at Waterworld just for the exercise to keep it real.
LM- What do you expect to deliver?
MG- 1st place podium results, having a good time getting there and going the distance.

Liquid Militia riders Mark Gomez & Zack Bright are heading to this event.

Zack Bright at the Grayland Open 2011
- ZACK BRIGHT -
LM- Type of ski you are going to be on?
ZB- A prototype Super Jet built by Maxi at Jetmotion.
LM- Thoughts going into this event on the performance and caliber of the event participants?
ZB- It should be a great event! My friend Mariano Riva will be there and he is a good rider. I think the event is going to be really great.
LM- What do you know about the potential waters there, good size?
ZB- It looks be ok size for what we do.. The ski I will be riding is really short so I’ll be able to make things happen.
LM- Do you anticipate crowds to show, what will they be looking for?
ZB- Yes, I’m pretty sure there will be BMX and Freestyle motocross at the event as well, so there will be a lot of people attending and supporting a great venue.
LM- What do you expect of yourself at this event?
ZB- Well, #1 is making sure my ankle is going to be ok. Other than that, I’ll just throw it down like I usually do!
LM- Have you been here before, if so, note a memorable moment:
ZB- It’s my first time to Argentina so every part will be memorable!
Applause:
I want to thank all my sponsors for their support; Cold-Fusion, Blowsion,Light-Weight.de, Liquid Militia Clothing, Hydro-Turf, Kal-Gard Oil, Powder and Sun Ride shop, Go-Pro, and Premier Lath & Plaster. also thank you to Daniel Paddu, Pablo Wolf, and Daniel Pertovt for inviting me over for this and making it a reality!

Mark Gomez at the Pismo Freeride 2011
- MARK GOMEZ -
LM- Type of ski you are going to be on?
MG- I will be riding a custom built Yamaha Superjet from my friends at Radical Jet ski in Argentina. My friends Rodry Duran, Mai Adams, Luis Hernan Corti, and Leonardo Gomez have all been working away at building it for the last 3-4 months. These guys are great friends who are really going out of their way to make me something really cool. I can’t wait to see them and ride this ski.
LM- Yeah, I remember reading your post on facebook about the new build! That’s fantastic!
LM- Thoughts going into this event on performance and caliber of the event participants?
MG- From what I understand and have seen in years past with Ross/Pierre. Zack and I will be going to do more of a series of Pro Rider expeditions for the fans at the event. This event is Argentina’s Freeride Nationals so there will no doubt be some serious talent there throwing down to win the Freeride title of their country. I look forward to meeting and riding with these pilots and all of the local fans of Freeride.
LM- What do you know about the potential waters there, good size?
MG- From what I have seen and heard from friends the water can be a little brown which is interesting but much easier to not think about sharks in muddy waters. Also the surf seems to be often Inconsistent and kind of rough. No doubt they were the conditions we had the first day this year in Oregon but in the end they still provide possibilities for big air tricks. Clean consistent surf riding is what I fear might be tough to accomplish and or get a rhythm for in the rough water. I hope for the best conditions and plan to do the best I can regardless.
LM- Do you anticipate crowds to show, what will they be looking for?
MG- From the photos of last year’s participation and the fact it is the countries finals for freeride, I can only imagine that there will be tons of people. I am honestly not going to be sure until I get there but I fear it may be overwhelming. Only because the people of Argentina are %110 more stoked on Freeride right now than any other country in the world I feel. This makes me a little bit nervous because I know they will be looking for a damn good show being that Pierre Maixent was just in town the other week throwing down for the crowds at another Argentine beach location.
LM- What do you expect of yourself at this event?
MG- I expect to be able to give back the most I can to the generous people and fans who have invited me there. I hope to be able to communicate and reach out to as many fans as I can to connect and pass on a positive message for the sport and my sponsors that have helped me get to the level which brought me opportunities like this. I also plan to step up my riding to the next level with my aerials and start dancing in the tray doing variations while I’m upside down like Zack and Pierre.
LM- Have you been here before, if so, share a memorable moment:
MG- I have never been there before but my girlfriend Bianca’s entire family is from Argentina and I have heard so much I cannot wait to experience and soak up all the new culture with her.
Applause:
I want to thank everyone who has supported me as I have been pushing to reach toward new goals and opportunities. You can follow me on facebook here: Mark Gomez and my website blog Here to stay updated with what I am up to and for my post event recaps. Thank you again for your support! Where do we start? How about with the Grayland Open Freeride Competition top winners! Days before the event our team riders were making their convoy preparations.
ZACK ATTACK
Liquid Militia Team Rider Zack Bright packed up his war “Bright’s” black and yellow machine. Zack’s father, Jack Bright and up and comer free rider lil’ brother Jake Bright made it a family caravan. Heading up from Southern California to Grayland Open for the hours long and thousand plus mile trip, heading into the competition fringe. It pays to stick together, the edge is a place of reckoning and Zack pressurized blasts stop hits off of steep walls.
TEEN SENSATION
Fellow Liquid Militia rider Chrstian Young who is only 13 years old from Oceanside California had his father Mike Young bring him and his ride up to Washington. The Young’s stopped off and picked up Mark Gomez. Making this trip a ‘Triple Threat’ road trip of a Liquid Militia Force Multiplier by the end of the journey!
TANNER TIME
Liquid Militia’s newest addition to the 2011 team is Tanner Thomas. Tanner definitely has one of the crazy travel adventures. Tanner hails from Alaska and had to load his truck and jet skis, put them on a barge to cross the ocean. Landing in Seattle, Washington Tanner flies into Seattle and has to pick up his vehicle delivery from AML. Tanner then drives down to Washington to get onboard the Grayland Open Liquid Militia Express! Lucky for Tanner AML is a coveted sponsor of his, and not only support Tanner, but by doing so, they support Freeride.
FANTASTIC FOUR
The meet and greet of Liquid Militia Team riders is finalized Thursday in Washington and from there, only history awaits performance. And in their own words, we step aside.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Tanner-
“Yes I was run absolutely ragged. I competed in Amateur Freeride, Pro Moto Surf, Sit Down Freeride and the Big Air Comp. I went out and hucked a backflip for the Big Air comp. First flip of the year on my new ski. I had some water ingestion issues and didn’t get to ride to my full potential on the semi-final round, but I had an absolute blast and it was the perfect way to kick off my Summer tour! The Grayland Open is a very important event as an amateur freerider. I am so thankful for all the people who make that event happen, it was a great success, I appreciate my sponsors support.”
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Zack-
“I hurt my ankle during a flat landing on the Madonna Flip during the Big Air Event. My foot stayed in the foothold and my right knee bent left and almost touched the Hydro-Turf while my hip remained straight soooo…. pop goes the weasel! I thought it was ok until i tried to put weight on it and then I knew it was bad. It really sucked because I wanted to put on a show for everyone but sometimes things don’t go the way you want them. But hey, at least it is not broken and I snagged the win.”
“I just want to say how proud I am of Christian Young. And my Brother Jake Bright. The amount of skills these 2 have put together in such a short amount of time is amazing. What’s really cool is how these 2 have become good friends and are always pushing each other to the next level. I’m also stoked on Tanner Thomas from good ole Alaska. This kid hasn’t rode surf since Surf Slam. He comes to Grayland and walks away with 3 trophies! The kid has skills and I can’t wait to see what he, Christian, and Jake bring to the table come the 2011 Surf Slam.’
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Mark-
“I played Mike Young and Mc’ed the entire event to call tricks for the judges but ended up turning into being the full event MC. It was a great event to be at. That really brought us together in the spirit of Freeride. It wasn’t about us; it was about giving our freeride groms the best competition and most positive experience that they could get. Just seeing the level of amplitude and intensity that came out of Christian Young and Jake Bright in this contest, made the entire trip worth it. I am so proud of our little McNugget Christian for literally almost going for broke. There may have been no prize money or incentive to make it out there but just the entire atmosphere that was around that event ,was what will most likely bring riders like Zack Bright and myself back out next year.”
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Christian-
“Grayland was an awesome experience for me. I had a great time! I ended up hurting my ankle in the final heat up against Jake Bright fighting for first place. I did what felt like a Bright back flip and I came down really flat on the landing. When I landed I fell off the back of the tray and I tweaked it ‘just right’. The E.M.T. said that I sprained it really bad but I am now on the way to recovery fast and I am ready for Surf Slam! I ended up taking second and I’m proud of my performance.’

September 10-12, 2010, Pacific City, Oregon USA
LiquidMilitia.com
Team Liquid Militia arrived from Southern California by caravan, air and land. Trucks, rental cars, trailers and competition boats descended early on the morning of Friday the 10th for qualifying positions in gloomy weather. Saturday preliminaries and Sunday’s finals shone in perfect conditions and closed with fog. The LM team set up a Liquid Militia Team House a typical of our ‘KOABFD’ way of life. Good Times!
Liquid Militia’s Zack Bright takes the spotlight with an overall win in the K&S Kuwait Big Air Showdown! Zack pulled off the biggest solo trick on 3 runs and earned himself $500.00. This was Zack’s first time competing on his brand new Freeride Rickter boat, an impressive debut.
Mark Gomez was not only battling in the Surf Slam, but exhaustion from driving 24 hours straight up the Western Coastline from California, an arduous 1200 mile trek. Mark was throwing decent no handed barrel rolls one after the other on his ‘Black Pearl’ Yamaha Super Jet.
Cuong Son scoped up the wild card for the finals on his Rickter. ‘King Cuong’ was picking off the set waves and did his reverse foot aerials. Cuong was going big and hitting one hand and foot nose stabs. Cuong was hitting big air Nor Cal Style, and is getting used to his new Rickter.
Stanton High was riding his newly acquired Yamaha Super Jet and bombing huge re-entries and low tucks. He has his own style unique to himself and not like any other riders. He really stands out in the surf with his fluid and laid back but aggressive rides.
Jared Ajlouny wanted to do a double back flip for the Big Air show but never captured a worthy wave in his heat. He was hoping for better surf conditions but they never arrived. Jared pulled off a single back flip with the water that was delivered on his yellow hull.
The Liquid Militia Team was ‘Team Yellow’ this past weekend, with most of our riders on yellow stand up. We are very proud to be working with some of the finest talent in the PWC community.
LM Team Placings
1st Place in the K&S Kuwait Big Air taken by Zack Bright. Mark Gomez, Stanton High and Maxime Baroero all ‘tied’ for fifth place in the Pro Freeride Competition. Zach Bright placed 9th ‘tied’ with Bruno Jacob, Chris Rosner, Jerry Jones, Cuong Son, Tiago Geitens, and Jerry Brandon.

In Daytona, Friday was a little uneventful. Chris MacClugage didn’t show up with my ski until about 1pm, yet I wasn’t able to get it out of the trailer and install my new prototype AC Racing handle pole until about 3:45. I finished installing the new pole and was rushing my ski into the water at 4:30 with less than 30 minutes to ride before the beach closed at 5pm. unfortunately I was not able to ride and spent the next 3 hours pulling my carburetors apart to unstick my needle and seats that were stuck shut from the long transport. That night we all partied at the beach house about 10 min down from the event site where a huge pallet bonfire was lit, Pit bikes and mini ATC’s circled the party, and loud music kept everyone having a great time.
The next day I made sure to be the first one in the water, it was a stormy day with scattered rain and overcast conditions. I had a lot of fun riding but eventually came in after an hour very frustrated because I overlooked a component on the new handle pole that allows me to install a spring to reduce the weight I have to lift on the pole. I ended up taking an hour and a half to remove the new pole and install my old pole that I brought. This was the best thing I could do because I felt so much more comfortable and fluid riding with a handle pole spring.
A few hours later I signed up for the sickest trick contest Sponsored by Hydro-Turf. The ground rules were one person goes out and gets 5 waves to attempt to pull the sickest tricks you can. My first wave I pulled my first one handed re entry, the next wave I wanted to get a feel for how high I can launch myself and threw myself in a scary high barrel roll, the third wave I attempted a barrel roll Re entry which didn’t go so well. My fourth wave I went for the double barrel roll with only 15 ft to run at the wave when I wanted 30, I still made a hair over 1 ½ rolls. On my way in I attempted to barrel roll over a breaking wave but got sucked in and spit up the opposite side. Macc and Ant Burgess ended up splitting the title with Macc going for a huge double back flip attempt and Ant going huge on some back flip variables.Later on when I went to go ride, I ended up sharing some waves and riding with child hood hero, Rick Roy. That was an incredible experience I really appreciated. That night we partied at the local club Razzles. A lot of shenanigans took place that night but overall it was a fun night meeting a ton of cool people, and having a great time with my friends at Liquid Militia. The following morning I was again the first one in the water at 8:50 am to ride some really big and clean surf for Daytona. It was a beautiful morning and I rode my ski for about an hour and a half before my half tank of gas was empty. After I cleaned up the room I was in to check out, Natalie drove me to get more gas so I could ride for the rest of the day. Another 2 hour ride session left me extremely tired and ready to slow down for a few minutes until I was convinced to race in the amateur motosurf race. This ended up being the most fun thing I could of done next to the sickest trick all weekend.Having never raced before I took advice from a few friends and race legend Chris MacClugage which was really helpful. His wife Rachel ended up finding a pair of race goggle for me to borrow which really came in handy! The first moto I ended up right behind the leader by a buoy before I ate it big time coming around the inside buoy. After a swift swim I was back in the race and held 3rd place until the end! The race was a promotional race where the top 3 amateurs raced in the Pro class vs. Chris MacClugage, Dustin Farthing, and a handful of other experienced racers for a $1000 prize.Halfway through the race Macc and Farthing ended up breaking down and the amateurs took the same finishing position including myself beating the other racers on the track! I also ended up coming in front of a perfect launch wave on the final lap that I threw a barrel roll off which was really fun! The entire experience was super tiring after the entire weekend and the intensity of the race but I would not trade that experience for anything.
A 3 hour drive back to West Palm beach I spent a day at my main sponsor Wamiltons customs to relax, recoup, and help out around the shop before I ended up here at the West Palm airport writing this blog.Overall Daytona was a huge success and killer event. I had so much fun riding, and meeting a ton of really cool people. Now I have to get home, get my ski back from MacClugage in Havasu, and figure out how afford to get to the Australian Pro Invite Open February 20th!
Until the next event,-Mark Gomez
